Project Types

When there are needs to be fulfilled and problems to be solved through a certain processes that crate some outputs, we call it a project. Project can be anything, starting from designing, calculation, drafting, boat building as well as maintenance and repair projects. The more complex the project is, the more complete the owner requirement statement coverage should be. By looking at the owner requirement statement, we would be able to define what kind of a project that will be performed by all involved key stake holders.

Spiral Design

Marine vessel design is a spiral design process, a continuous iteration steps until final consensus is reached. Starts with ideas and ends with design outputs. Most of cases, owner comes with general ideas and some with clear requirements. Sometimes we all are easily tempted (eagerly want to see the expected results, or project vision, … it is very normal though) to directly jump into technical design work without a clear working guidance and common grounds (now this is dangerous) between all involved key stake holders. Without a clear owner requirement statement and project guidelines, the design process will be difficult to be performed and it will be inefficient and going in a circle without a definite end.

It is always way better to make efficient preparation in the beginning and than later run the design work smoothly.

Traditional Wooden Boat Building

Our project is about working with people and each individual is a unique person. Especially in our traditional boat building projects, we (owners, traditional builders, consultants, suppliers, subcontractors, etc.) work together as a team and we are coming from various backgrounds (business persons, engineers, craftsman, technicians, passionate builders, etc.) and cultures (overseas from regional or global, local traditional, local urban, just locals, etc.).

How we all as a team can achieve the same project goals? All key stake holders have to really understand and shared the points described in the project guidelines, starting from project vision, to agreed action plans.

About Endurance

Projects could last for quite a long period. Learning curve and challenges will exist. Emotion can be involved and level of excitement of each key stake holder could fluctuate. People get tired frustrated and bored easily if there are too many problems and failure that show no hope or no indication of success.

How can we maintain our endurance during the project period and keep the good spirit energized all the time among the project team member? Be a success and solution oriented person, a part of good project attitudes, helps a lot. Problems will be around and it’s normal. Avoid being too focused in finding mistakes and someone to blame (we find it a very contra productive attitude). Instead, create an effective and efficient problem solving and risk management system. As long as we can manage our expectation, we won’t get easily disappointed. Work as a team to concentrate on solutions and do celebrate each achievement.
